Language development

at Charter Nurseries

Children with strong early language skills are more confident learners. They find it easier to build friendships, understand stories, solve problems and express their feelings. Early vocabulary is one of the strongest predictors of later success in school and beyond, which is why we make language a central priority from the very start.

a strong focus on language

from day one

At Charter Nurseries, we don't leave communication to chance. As an evidence-informed trust, we work closely with our Research School to ensure our approach is grounded in the best available research.

Language development is planned, intentional and woven through every part of nursery life.

Evidence-informed practice

Our staff are trained to create rich, sustained back-and-forth conversations using the ShREC approach. We focus on shared attention, responsive interaction and extending children’s thinking through carefully chosen questions and discussion. Talk is purposeful and valued.

Structured language sessions

Alongside high-quality everyday interactions, children take part in structured small-group sessions designed to build vocabulary, storytelling and confidence in speaking. These sessions are engaging, ambitious and carefully matched to each child’s needs.

Language everywhere

You will see language everywhere in our nurseries — in the garden, in role play, in forest school, at snack time, indoors and outdoors. We believe every child deserves to be heard, understood and equipped with the words they need to thrive.
